Marine Window Sealant – One size does not fit all !

Each sealant has its own characteristics. Some marine window sealants shouldn’t be used with materials like plastics. Some sealants have limited elasticity, every sealant has a different purpose. Understanding the properties of each sealant is key to success to keeping your boat staying water tight.

NOT ALL SEALANTS STICK !

Not all sealants will adhere to all surfaces. If you are using the wrong silicone for the wrong surface, combined with challenging environmental components, damaging UV rays, and reactions from cleaning chemical, then it is a waste of time, effort and money.

THE SECRET TO SILICONE !

Silicone can mistakingly appear to be best friend for some jobs, but beware. You may be using a an acetoxy cure silicone or acid cure silicone, which are usually cheaper and have a very fast cure time. However the properties of this silicone is best suited for domestic indoor applications. We believe they should not be used on boats. Only high quality marine grade products are recommended for any marine window repairs. Premium alcohol or water cure silicone will stick well to smooth services, resists mould and mildew, are UV resistant, protect against harsh weather conditions and can potentially assist in damage from oil and cleaning solutions. The elasticity can have limitations and it can not be painted over, so it is advisable not to use near painted services. This type of silicone does stick well to plastics, given that most plastics are derived from petroleum based materials and leech oil on the surface.

REMEMBER SEALANTS ONLY HAVE A SHELF LIFE OF ABOUT 12 MTHS !
